Membership churn

Which members stop renewing, and when is their observation window complete?

Editorial draft · evidence pending

A practical decision guide, with no verified findings or benchmark. Calculator values are assumptions, not observed creator results.

Choose the churn event

A cancellation request may leave paid access running until the term ends. Payment failure can be temporary. Define churn as a failed paid renewal after a grace period, or use access expiry as a separately named metric.

Build a consistent denominator

Start with paid memberships eligible to renew, excluding trials, complimentary access and bundles. Combine active subscriptions with history to avoid dropping cancellations from the sample. Deduplicate tier switches and returning members according to an explicit policy.

Look at cohorts before explanations

Break down comparable billing intervals and service formats before reading exit reasons. Free-text reasons are selective and private. The calculator shows a simple period loss rate and remaining member count, not a survival model or a forecast of lifetime value.

Outside research and guidance

Following customers by first billing period makes it possible to see when retention changes instead of relying on one blended rate.

Your assumptions, not research findings

Period member-loss scenario

Starting values are illustrative arithmetic examples. Enter your own assumptions in a single currency.

Calculation: Members lost ÷ eligible members × 100.

Exclude new joiners from this starting cohort. This simple rate is not a survival estimate or lifetime-value forecast.

The evidence this question needs

Proposed: paid memberships due to renew in a calendar month, with seven-day payment grace and thirty-day refund observation; intervals remain separate.

  • Active/history transitions and reactivation/tier-change stitching need review; no durable subscription key survives every history path.
  • Payment due dates and reconciled settlement ledger required for renewal churn; end_date alone measures access ending.

Proposed minimum: 20 independently reviewed businesses per cohort. Sample size does not approve business stage, independence, statistical precision or disclosure safety.
